Kura-san's Wooden Kebari Case Dark Brown(4 Compartments) Magnet type

The new model of the Kura-san's wooden kebari case finished with cashew urushu(cashew lacquer) in dark brown. Very small sized for minimalist tenkara fishers.

Mr. Kazuo Kurahashi, whose nickname is Kura-san, is one of expert Tenkara fishers and also a semi-professional wood-craft worker.
He was born in1967 in Okayama of western Japan. He met Tenkara fishing in Chubu area where he lived when he was 30 years old. Since that time Tenkara fishing has been his most favorite hobby for more than 20 years.
On the other hand, he likes making things since he was a child and is currently researching and producing kebari cases for Tenkara kebari.

The material of this hand-made kebari box is Hinoki = Japanesecypress.
Hinoki is characterized by its beautiful wood grain, strong yet lightweight, and easy to process. In Japan, Hinoki has been widely used for wooden buildings and furnitures since ancient times. Hinoki is one of the best and readily available timbers anywhere in Japan.
Kura-san believes it is Tenkara style to give value to such simple hand-made items made of familiar materials.

The case is very compact and lightweight. The size of the case is approximately 63 mm (W) x 70 mm (D) x 22 mm (H) and weight is only 28g. No fancy, very simple. The paint and adhesive used for the case is very safe paint and adhesive which we use for dishes. ※ The paint uses "cashew paint". Cashew paint is made from oil extracted from cashew nutshell. We often use cashew paint as a substitute for Urushi(Japaneselacquer).

**As these products are handmade, there may be minute scratches etc. attached during production. Also, because we use natural materials, there may be parts that have different colors such as nodes. Cashew lacquer is finished by hand painting, so there may be some unevenness in the brush and color.

For those who are interested in real old fashioned tenkara fishing, we offer Basu(Traditional Horsetail Furled Taper Line Cream Color) made by famous tenkara master of Gujo-Gifu, Mr. Hisanobu Hirata.

Once in Tenkara fishing this Horsetail Furled line was used mostly. Nowadays a variety of modern materials and types of tenkara lines are produced, and the technique of making this old line is almost lost. Mr. Hirata continues to make Horse Tail Fuled lines to convey traditional Tenkara fishing to future generations. Known as "Tani no Okina(Old man of the valley)", a living legend of genryu tenkara fishing, Yuzo Sebata is probably the most well-known tenkara master of Japan. When he was in his early 20s, he met "Nikko Tenkara method", that was inherited by very limited number of mountain people secretly. He mastered Nikko Tenkara the end of the struggle, and subsequent years of mountain stream fishing career and practices he has developed that method by himself. Long furled taper line called "Sebata Line" and his kebaris called "Sebata Kebari" are especially famous.

Now we have great opportunity to offer these very famous "Sebata Lines" to foreign tenkara fishers. Sebata lines are gems of products that he has completed in the many years of his fishing life. Recently, Youzo Sebata has retired producing these lines unfortunately, but his friend Mr. Isimori has taken over producing Sebata lines from Yozo Sebata. The quality of lines are exactly same as Yuzo Sebata's. Mr. Ishimori is the only person who has been admitted to produce commercial Sebata lines by Yuzo Sebata.

The characteristic of Sebata Line is its flexibility and weight distribution. The line is furled with 4 to 6 supple nylon lines, and it has good weight for casting. You can cast the line very comfortably with 6:4 or 7:3 tenkara rods. This exquisite weight distribution and flexibility of the line does not allow the follow-up of other products.

Sebata Lines are using a nylon line that absorb some of the moisture, so if you put the line in the water for 2 or 3 minutes prior to use, the line becomes more supple and easier to handle.

The length of the line to the length of the rod is a personal preference, but rod length + 50cm to 200cm is recommended.

Mr. Kazuo Kurahashi, whose nickname is Kura-san, is one of expert Tenkara fishers and also a semi-professional wood-craft worker.
He was born in1967 in Okayama of western Japan. He met Tenkara fishing in Chubu area where he lived when he was 30 years old. Since that time Tenkara fishing has been his most favorite hobby for about 20 years.
On the other hand, he likes making things since he was a child and is currently researching and producing kebari cases for Tenkara kebari.

The material of this hand-made kebari box is Hinoki = Japanesecypress.
Hinoki is characterized by its beautiful wood grain, strong yet lightweight, and easy to process. In Japan, Hinoki has been widely used for wooden buildings and furnitures since ancient times. Hinoki is one of the best and readily available timbers anywhere in Japan.
Kura-san believes it is Tenkara style to give value to such simple hand-made items made of familiar materials.

The case is very compact and lightweight. The size of the case is approximately 118 mm (W) x 70 mm (D) x 22 mm (H) and weight is only 45 g. No fancy, very simple. The paint and adhesive used for the case is very safe paint and adhesive which we use for dishes. ※ The paint uses "cashew paint". Cashew paint is made from oil extracted from cashew nutshell. We often use cashew paint as a substitute for lacquer.

8 compartments are sized to store #10 or smaller kebari "not too many but too little".
If you don't like the size, you can remove the inner partitions and make it by yourself.
The outer box is kept as it is, only the interior can be customized.

The cork sheet laid on the bottom is the only decoration.

Mr. Kazuo Kurahashi, whose nickname is Kura-san, is one of expert Tenkara fishers and also a semi-professional wood-craft worker.
He was born in1967 in Okayama of western Japan. He met Tenkara fishing in Chubu area where he lived when he was 30 years old. Since that time Tenkara fishing has been his most favorite hobby for more than 20 years.
On the other hand, he likes making things since he was a child and is currently researching and producing kebari cases for Tenkara kebari.

The material of this hand-made kebari box is Hinoki = Japanesecypress.
Hinoki is characterized by its beautiful wood grain, strong yet lightweight, and easy to process. In Japan, Hinoki has been widely used for wooden buildings and furnitures since ancient times. Hinoki is one of the best and readily available timbers anywhere in Japan.
Kura-san believes it is Tenkara style to give value to such simple hand-made items made of familiar materials.

The case is very compact and lightweight. The size of the case is approximately 90 mm (W) x 70 mm (D) x 22 mm (H) and weight is only 36g. No fancy, very simple. The paint and adhesive used for the case is very safe paint and adhesive which we use for dishes. ※ The paint uses "cashew paint". Cashew paint is made from oil extracted from cashew nutshell. We often use cashew paint as a substitute for Urushi(Japaneselacquer).

“Jisaku-ya” was founded in 2019. They produce their own small wooden products inspired by traditional wooden products that have been used in Japan for a long time.

This kebari(fly) case is made of cedar wood with Sugi-yaki(cedar firing technique). This method gives the case a distinctive design. Sugi-yaki is a traditional technique of processing cedar board for the purpose of insect repellent and anti-corrosion. Sugi-yaki board was mainly used as an exterior wall material for houses. Since the Showa period, this method has been used to create folk crafts that make use of the natural grain of the wood, giving it a “wabi-sabi” feel. This product is also made of natural cedar and is finished with Sugi-yaki method, taking advantage of differences in wood grain, presence of knots, and color. Please feel the Japanese “wabi-sabi” by all means.

Mr. Yoshikazu Fujioka was born in 1948 in Kyoto, Japan. He graduated from Aichi University of the Arts and Music in 1970.
During his professional carrier, he was an acclaimed industrial space designer / producer and received many awards for his work.

Mr. Fujioka started fishing in the mountain streams of Japan in 1975, and also began his famous art work (painting and drawing of mountain streams, trout and other wildlife) around the same time. His artwork are on display at number of museums and other public facilities.

Also in 1975, he discovered some regional traditional kebari (flies) used for tenkara fishing in Sho-kawa (Sho River) region in a small shop. He has devoted his passion for collecting and studying traditional Japanese tenkara kebari since.
In 1997, he opened his website My Best Streams.

We are very much honored to present his traditional Densho kebari collection series. These kebari come in a traditional Japanese "Kiri bako" (foxglove) box. This is a masterpiece collection of Japanese mountain fishing culture, as well as a display of Mr. Fujioka’s long devotion to discovering and preserving authentic Japanese kebari patterns.

Akiyamago area kebari
Akiyamago village is located on the border of Nagano and Niigata prefecture. These are very simple traditional kebari used by local anglers. This simple kebari is made of two silk threads of yellow and black and rooster saddle hackle. Eye is made by two yellow silk threads that was twisted, and to keep the eye hole a paper string inserted. This kebari is one of Mr. Shigeo Yamada’s, He was an expert tenkara fisher and the last commercial fisherman(Shokuryoshi) of Akiyamago.

Arakawa area(Asahi mountain range) kebari
Asahi mountain range is a mountainous region in the prefectural boundary of Yamagata Pref. and Niigata Pref. Arakawa River has the source in Mt. Oasahidake(1,870m) of the main peak. Until middle1960's, Mr. Kenji Sato in Higura and Mr. Unkichi Saito in Tokuami caught fish there as commercial fishers(Shokuryoshi). Mr. Sato's fishing method was handed down from his grandfather's day.

Ashio area kebari
Ashio is the area in the most upper part of the Watarase River. It is in the prefectural boundary of Tochigi prefecture and Gunma prefecture, surrounded by 1,000m to 2,000m class mountains. Because plowing a field was the main agriculture in this mountainous area of steep slope, neither the cow nor the horse was needed for people’s life. So tenkara fishing that did not use basu(furled taper line made of horse tail.) was devised by Mr. Kashiichi Yagisawa of Ashio Kakemizu. Copper wire is used from backing to finish to put weight to the krbari because furled tapered line was not used around this area.

Nikko area kebari 1(Gorocho Kebari)
This typical Nikko Kebari is called Gorocho kebari. They say many Gorocho (Stenopsyche japonica) lived in Yugawa river of Nikko. Someone of diplomats or Tokyo Angling club's members ,who had enjoyed trout fishing in Yugawa river and Marunuma lake in the beginning of Showa era or the late Meiji era, ordered this pattern of flies to Hardy UK. Those flies were registered to Hardy and records remain even now.

Oze area kebari
Kebari of Mr. Kosaku Hirano’s. Oze is the huge plateau wetland across three prefectures of Fukushima, Niigata, and Gunma. This wetland is the headstream area of Tadami river. To serve it to the guest at the mountain lodge "Hiuchi-goya" of Ozegahara that his father-in-law had built, Mr. Kosaku Hirano were doing the iwana fishing. Oze was specified the special natural treasure latet on. They refrained from fishing after all though they were permitted to fish there.

Kurobe genryu area kebari
The kebari of commercial fishermen(Shokuryoshi) of Kurobe genryu(headstream) that is in Northern Japanese Alps of 3,000 meter class mountains in the border of Toyama Pref. and Nagano Pref. This is the kebari of Mr. Zenichirou Onikubo who fished iwana (char) in the Kurobe headstream for 40 years. Body is tied three times by silk black thread and peacock herl. Shamisen string is used for the eye.

Matsumoto area kebari
This is a rare styled double hackeled kebari that has been used since long time ago around Matsumotoarea in Nagano Pref. and also in the wide area such as the main stream and branch of Azusagawa River, Saigawa River and Hakuba area in addition to Kisogawa River and Naraigawa River. I heard that this kebari had been tied by the grandfather of one fishing tackle shop owner, and the production of kebaris are commissioned to a fly hook workshop of Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture) now.

Takayama area kebari
This kebari was used at Miyagawa river system of Gifu prefecture. This kebari is typical "Sakasakebari" in Japan. Kebari is tied with reverse hackle. The eye is made by black silk yarn.

Shokawa area kebari
Shogawa is a river flowing from northern Gifu Prefecture to Toyama prefecture, and the basin has Shirakawago and Gokayama, famous for Gassho-style houses.
This kebari has ginger hackle, and body of red silk thread. Eye is made by black silk yarn.

Fujioka Collection Traditional Densho Kebari Set Western Japan 2

Mr. Yoshikazu Fujioka was born in 1948 in Kyoto, Japan. He graduated from Aichi University of the Arts and Music in 1970.
During his professional carrier, he was an acclaimed industrial space designer / producer and received many awards for his work.

Mr. Fujioka started fishing in the mountain streams of Japan in 1975, and also began his famous art work (painting and drawing of mountain streams, trout and other wildlife) around the same time. His artwork are on display at number of museums and other public facilities.

Also in 1975, he discovered some regional traditional kebari (flies) used for tenkara fishing in Sho-kawa (Sho River) region in a small shop. He has devoted his passion for collecting and studying traditional Japanese tenkara kebari since.
In 1997, he opened his website My Best Streams.

We are very much honored to present his traditional Densho kebari collection series. These kebari come in a traditional Japanese "Kiri bako" (foxglove) box. This is a masterpiece collection of Japanese mountain fishing culture, as well as a display of Mr. Fujioka’s long devotion to discovering and preserving authentic Japanese kebari patterns.

Gujo area
Originally this kebari had been handed down around Mino Gujo area. Unfortunately no one uses this type of traditional kebari. This kebari is re-made by modern sense. The kebari has body of cotton of flowering fern(Zenmai).

Oku-mikawa Area
Oku-Mikawa Highlands is located in the southwest of the Kiso Mountains (Central Alps). It is next to Nagano Prefecture, and the tenkara fishing for amago is superior there. This kebari is tied by Mr. Fujioka referring to the bulbul wing hackle kebari of the rod maker Takeo Suzuki who lived in Asuke.

Shokawa Area
Shokawa(Sho River) is one of very popular rivers in Gifu for keiryu fishing. Quite a few of Shokuryoshi(Professional fishers) fished in this river. This is the typical kebari used around this area that has hackle of pheasant's feather and body of cotton of zenmai and peacock herl.

Kyoto Area
Traditional kebari used in Kyoto. This kebari is the replica that Mr. Fujioka made. It has hackle of ginger or light brown, body of white or orange color goose quill or duck quill and silk thread, and ribbing of peacock herl. Hook is the same bait hook (Sode-gata) as the above, and eye is made by light brown yarn.

Takami Mt. Area
Takami Mountains is located at the prefectural border of Nara and Mie. There are headwaters of Takamigawa River and Kushidagawa River in the area. Kebari fishing(Tenkara fishing) in this area, they had put 2 kebari on the line.

Nakagawa Area
This kebari was used by Mr. Rikichi Maruyama who was the master of Tenkara fishing in Nakagawa(Naka River) in Tokushima . Tenkara fishing in this area was called "Tobase-tsuri". He did not use tools, just sit cross-legged, tangled the thread to the great toe and tied kebari. The eye was not attached, so the tippet was tied directly to the neck of the kebari
